Crews are investigating a fire that destroyed one home and damaged another nearby in Vancouver’s Sunset neighbourhood Tuesday afternoon.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services tells The Leader Spirit Vancouver it happened shortly after noon along East 58th Avenue.

“Upon arrival, there was heavy black smoke and flames presenting from the rear of the house,” Assistant Fire Chief Keith Stewart told 1130 NewsRadio.

“Our crews were able to stretch lines around the back and get water on the house as quickly as possible.”

Stewart says crews were able to contain the fire to the one house.

VFRS says one occupant was in the home at the time. The occupant suffered a light burn to their neck area but refused medical treatment from British Columbia Emergency Health Services.

Stewart says there was fire exposure towards a neighbouring home on the east side but fire crews were able to put that one out quickly. The neighbouring home sustained minor damage, according to Stewart.

According to fire crews, the original house that caught fire will likely be torn down because the roof was destroyed.

“There was significant damage to the upper floor of this two-story home,” said Stewart.

VFRS says there were no other injuries.
