Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Richmond, B.C.

With Christmas just around the corner, Vancouver International Airport says it anticipates Friday will be its busiest travel day for the entire holiday season.

YVR is expecting 80,000 passengers to pass through Friday and roughly 1.4 million passengers between now and the first week of January.

Operations have so far been running smoothly at North America’s top-ranked airport, says YVR communications manager Alyssa Smith.

That doesn’t mean you should dilly dally though, she says.

“The security screening is one where people may find themselves in a bit of a longer line,” Smith said.

“Give yourself about two hours ahead of your domestic or U.S. flight and about three hours out of an international flight, just to make sure that you can clear that security line with enough time to spare.”

Smith adds that the most crowded times will likely be between 1 and 4 p.m. and then from about 7 p.m. until 11:30 p.m.

Hawaii, Cancun, and Hong Kong are said to be the top destinations this Christmas.
