Gas prices jump in Vancouver after West Coast refinery problems

You might suffer from a little sticker shock Monday morning if you have to fill up your tank during your commute.

The price for a litre of regular gas has jumped past $1.77 in Vancouver.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average retail price for a litre of regular gas rose 10.4 c/L last week, to average around $1.71 on Sunday.

“Even with oil prices jumping more than $4 per barrel compared to last week, average gasoline prices across much of Canada have remained relatively steady, though some provinces saw notable increases,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“British Columbia saw a significant rise in prices, driven by refinery issues on the U.S. West Coast that disrupted supply, while Alberta’s increase was largely tied to the recent surge in oil prices. Most other provinces saw only minor changes. As we approach the Victoria Day long weekend, Canadians may see some localized fluctuations, but at the national level, I don’t expect significant movement in average prices for now,” he added.

Even with the jump due to refinery problems, the price of gas in Vancouver remains almost 30 c/L lower than the same day in 2024.

In the last five years, prices on May 12 have ranged widely, from $1.01 in 2020 to $2.16 in 2022 and $1.99 in 2024.
