Grouse Grind to close Friday evening for fundraiser challenge

Access to the Grouse Grind Trail in North Vancouver will grind to a halt Friday unless you’re one of the grinders willing to rise, grind, and grind again as part of an annual competition.
The official Multi-Grouse Grind Challenge started at 4 a.m. and will see participants ascending the treacherous 2.9-kilometre course that boasts 800 metres of elevation as many times as they can before 10 p.m.
After 7:30 p.m., the trail will be closed except to registrants raising funds for the North Shore Rescue service.
“This is the official and only sanctioned event to determine the record-holder for most ascents of the Grouse Grind in a one-day period,” said a notice by the Grouse Mountain Resort.
The company says it anticipates the arrival of a challenge winner by 10:40 p.m.
North Shore Rescue says one of its own volunteers will be attempting to complete 20 grinds. The volunteer, Damien, says he’s hoping to improve on his previous personal record of 18 grinds.
“NSR doesn’t charge for rescues. That means we rely on donations to cover essential costs like rescue gear, safety equipment, training, and advanced technology. If you have ever recreated in the North Shore mountains – or just love knowing help is out there if someone needs it – we would be very grateful for your support,” said a post on Damien’s support page.
Donations to support any or all participants can be made on a dedicated website for the event.
