Suspected bandit shot after car chase

A suspected car thief is being treated for gunshot wounds he received after a shootout with police in St Anns on Sunday evening.

Police said members of the Western Division Task Force received a report that a Honda CRV was stolen from it’s owners in Four Roads, Diego Martin, at around 4.30 pm.

They saw the car and chased it around the Queen’s Park Savannah.

The car was eventually intercepted on St Anns Avenue, near the St Anns RC Church.

As police called on the man to drop come out of the car, he allegedly shot at them.

They returned fire hitting the man.

Other men who were in the car ran away.

Police took the wounded man to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds up to 7.30 pm.

One pistol was allegedly seized from the car.

Up to late on Sunday night police, with assistance from the canine unit, searched the churchyard and nearby areas for the other men.

Western Division police are continuing enquiries.
