Police are investigating the New Year’s Day murder of a Morvant man who was chopped to death during a dispute.
The dead man was identified as Darryl Villafana and was the listed as the first murder victim for 2021.
Police said Villafana was at his Chrysanthemum Drive, Morvant, home at around 4.30 am, New Year’s Day, when he was confronted by two men armed with cutlasses.
The men chopped Villafana several times before running away, police said.
Residents heard the commotion and called the police.
Morvant police went to the scene with a district medical officer (DMO) and found Villafana’s body in the bedroom of the house. The doctor declared Villafana dead and his body was taken to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Investigators said Villafana’s hands were almost severed in the attack.
Police said a suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and inquiries are continuing.
