Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, the military commander leading vaccine logistics at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), has left his post and is now the subject of a military investigation, according to a statement from the Department of National Defence.
The brief statement does not describe any allegations against Fortin or explain the nature of the investigation.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tasked Fortin with leading Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution effort in the fall.
A former commander of the NATO mission in Iraq, Fortin has been a feature of PHAC’s briefings since then, providing updates on the effort to distribute vaccines across the country.
Fortin also was involved in planning the CAF missions in pandemic-hit long-term care homes over the summer. The harrowing reports the soldiers produced after working in those homes led the federal government to draft new directives on seniors’ care.
Fortin was at the centre of a new military-supported hub within PHAC — the National Operations Centre — that was built to help coordinate the deployment of millions of vaccine doses over the coming months.
