Injured dog allegedly dumped in Vancouver park bin

A dog with broken bones was found allegedly dumped inside a garbage bin at a Vancouver park near UBC this week.

The poor pup was found by a passerby in a public, wildlife-proof garbage bin along a trail in Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

But things are looking up for the dog since he was rescued and put in the care of the Squamish Neighbourhood Animal Partnership and Protection Society (SNAPPS).

Laurie Schildt, a long-time volunteer dog rescuer with SNAPPS, says the dog, now named ‘Oscar,’ was discovered by a friend of hers who was tossing a piece of gum when he saw something move.

“So he looked a little further and realized it was a dog. The dog wasn’t whimpering, crying, even making a sound. Heartbreaking, how anybody could do this to such a beautiful little dog,” Schildt explained.

Oscar’s suffered three broken ribs, a dislocated hip, cuts, bruises, and other injuries in line with having been struck by a car or having suffered serious abuse.

“I get emotional to think that someone would leave him there to die like that. In the middle of nowhere,” said Schildt.

The BC SPCA and RCMP are both investigating and reminding people that abandoning a dog is a criminal offence.

Meanwhile, Oscar is recovering on painkillers and taking water by syringe. Showing signs of improving Friday, he started walking for the first time since he was discovered.

But the roughly 10-year-old pup isn’t out of the woods yet, as he may still need surgery.

Schildt says she is taking donations to help cover the cost of Oscar’s veterinarian bills.

“We’re just going day by day right now. For now, we have him on pain medication. Keeping him comfortable. Letting him decompress from his situation, and we have a follow-up appointment with the vet as well, so just lots of bedrest and love right now.”
