Jail sentence for New Westminster recovery services contractor

A former New Westminster recovery services contractor, previously convicted of sexual assault, has been handed a three-year jail sentence.

Adam Haber was arrested and initially charged with three counts of sexual assault in May of 2023 following a police investigation that came about after graphic, vulnerable, heartbreaking, and disturbing allegations surfaced in an anonymous Facebook group that same year.

Earlier this year, he was convicted on two counts and late last week was sentenced to time behind bars. He’s also been added to the Sex Offender Registry for the next 20 years and has to follow court-ordered weapons prohibitions.

Those in the Facebook group outlined incidents against a contractor with connections to both Last Door Recovery Centre and Westminster House in New Westminster. The latter treats women. Some of the posts suggested predatory behaviour, including sexual assault and harassment, often targeting women who were trying to get clean or who had relapsed while they were desperately seeking help and support.

Others said they voiced concerns at the time but were dismissed by officials.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) confirms 11 women came forward to provide statements to investigators, although it’s believed there are others who’ve never spoken up.

“We’re inspired by the bravery of the women who came forward to speak to investigators about what happened to them,” said NWPD Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “While the trial is over, our Victim Assistance Unit is here to support you in your healing journey.”

He adds that the department’s Major Crime Unit and Specialized Investigations Unit remain available to anyone who needs to talk.

“If you’ve experienced sexual violence or need someone to talk to, please reach out. Our team can connect you with our Victim Assistance Unit or community-based supports.”

The Facebook group has more than 1,000 members, and some recent comments following his sentencing include, “This group has created a safe space for others to come forward, which there more than likely will be. Appreciate you all for standing up against people like Adam H.”

Another commenter said, “Many thanks to those who came forward and spoke up when it was hard to do so. Your strength in this ordeal speaks volumes.”
