Kelowna mother frustrated her baby’s birth certificate held up due to strikes
A Kelowna mother says she has been struggling as ongoing strikes by Canada Post and B.C.’s public sector workers have held up her new baby’s birth certificate.
The delay is a problem for Kim Le, who gave birth in September, as she has planned a trip to Vietnam in December and she needs the certificate in order to apply for her baby’s passport.
“Without a birth certificate, you don’t have anything in this country,” she said.
“We can’t go anywhere, we can’t do anything with my baby.”
Le says the holdup is also impacting her financially, as she can’t register for the Canada Child Benefit.
In a statement, the Ministry of Citizens’ Services said the BCGEU and Canada Post strikes are impacting their services, including the issuance of birth, death, and marriage certificates.
They say emergency and rush requests will be processed as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, as time ticks down to Le’s December travel date, she is now trying to get her baby a temporary passport as a backup plan.
