Lougheed HWY closed after 2 pedestrians struck

The Burnaby RCMP says a section of Lougheed Highway is closed Tuesday night after a truck driver struck two women walking near North Road.
Mounties say they were called to the scene near Coquitlam around 5:20 p.m. for reports of a collision involving two pedestrians at the intersection of the two major thoroughfares.
“The two female victims have been transported to hospital,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj told 1130 NewsRadio. “Their injuries are unknown at this time.”
Kalanj says the truck driver remained on scene and is speaking with police, but the intersection will remain closed for several hours as the investigation continues.
“We have not definitely concluded what the cause of collision was, which is why we’re going to be there for a
while,” he said.
Kalanj adds that speed and alcohol have not been ruled out as part of the investigation, as of 6:30 p.m.
Drivers can take Gaglardi Way, Brunette Avenue and Highway 1 to avoid congestion.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story described the truck involved as a “semi truck” based on direct information from the Burnaby RCMP. In fact, images from the scene show a crashed pickup truck.
