Man canvassing downtown apartments for SickKids donations is a scammer: police

A man who has been canvassing downtown Toronto apartment buildings asking for cash donations for the SickKids Foundation is a scammer who has no association with the hospital, Toronto police warned in a release on Friday.

Police say the man has been going door-to-door asking for donations while wearing a lanyard around his neck with a fake SickKids Foundation identification badge.

But he doesn’t work for the SickKids, and the foundation stresses that its employees never canvas apartments or condo buildings seeking cash donations.

The SickKids Foundation adds that its legitimate canvassers wear an identity card attached to a lanyard with the canvassers name, ID# and a QR code which can be scanned for additional information

“SickKids Foundation canvassers never solicit for cash donations and are forbidden from doing so,” the police release adds.
