Man charged with sexual assault: New Westminster Police

The New Westminster Police Department says a man is now facing charges after allegations of sexual assault earlier this month.

In a statement on Friday, Sgt. Andrew Leaver says the alleged incidents happened in New Westminster and a neighbouring municipality after a woman responded to an advertisement in a Facebook group looking for women who wanted housekeeping work.

“Shortly after interviewing for the job, the male allegedly sexually assaulted her at a residence” on Ontario Street near McInness Street, Leaver shared.

The NWPD says a man was arrested and released on court-ordered conditions after the BC Prosecution Service approved four charges of sexual assault.

“We encourage anyone with information or concerns to come forward,” Leaver said. “We understand the challenges victims face in reporting such incidents and want to reassure the public that we take these matters very seriously and resources and support are available.”

The NWPD is now urging anyone who may have been a victim of a similar offence to contact the New Westminster Major Crime Unit at 604-529-2430.

“The Major Crime Unit is working closely with the Victim Assistance Unit and counsellors on this file. The New Westminster Police Department provides a victim-centered approach and a trauma-informed practice,” Leaver added.
