Man survives attack by grizzly bear near Fort Nelson
The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) says a grizzly bear has avoided a death sentence after attacking a man last week near Fort Nelson.
The service says the man was attacked Friday morning, just as he and some other workers at a remote camp spotted the bear and two cubs.
“The victim was bitten and scratched before the bear disengaged. Group members assisted the victim, who was flown to hospital for treatment and has since been released,” a release explained Sunday.
Conservation officers investigated the attack, interviewed the victim and a witness, and determined the bear was acting defensively.
“Due to these factors, including the remote location, there are no efforts being taken to capture or dispatch the bear,” said the service.
Last year, the Conservation Officer Service was forced to destroy 24 grizzly bears in B.C. So far, only one has been reported destroyed by the service in 2025.
