Metro Vancouver charity seeks rain and winter clothing donations

As a week of rainfall stormed over Metro Vancouver, one local charity called out for donations of rain gear and winter coats to keep its community members dry and warm.

Union Gospel Mission spokesperson Nick Wells says the need is desperate.

“I’ve talked to our mobile team and folks who help hand out our clothes throughout the community, we’re completely out of winter coats,” Wells told The Leader Spirit.

While UGM hands out ponchos regularly, the stock is dwindling. Staff say it’s even more difficult for those who are unhoused to stay warm during the wet weather.

“The real concern for us is helping community members stay dry as well as those who are already wet to try to get dry again,” Wells explained. “The wet can really be harmful for our community members’ health, we’re seeing more gangrene cases on the Downtown Eastside, and that, obviously, thrives on wet, dirty and damp conditions.”

UGM’s Vancouver location on East Hastings Street hosts a drop-off box near reception, where donations can be made. Staff will sort through the pile and pull the most useful items out every Monday and Wednesday for people in need to grab. The UGM says items move pretty quickly.

Wells toured The Leader Spirit through the charity’s stock.

“There’s other winter stuff, there’s toques here — bunch of toques. There’s gloves, and neck warmers, shoes, socks — socks are always a big hit as well.”

Other clothing, like men’s underwear and joggers, is also welcome. Union Gospel Mission also accepts monetary donations online year-round.
