Metro Vancouver weather: Rain for rest of January

The Lower Mainland has been through bitter cold, a big dump of snow, and, now, rain. Lots of it.

The Leader Spirit Meteorologist Michael Kuss explains that you shouldn’t bother putting your umbrella away for the rest of January.

“It’s going to be really wet from now all the way through the end of the month. It looks like it will rain every day through until at least the 31st,” he said Tuesday.

“[We] could see another 100, 120 millimeters of precipitation between now and then, and that will get us up into the 250 millimeter range at least for monthly totals.”

As far as a normal January goes, that’s almost 100 mm more than the long-term average of 168.4 mm.

“You combine all the snow and the rain that we’ve had this month, we’re already at a normal amount of precipitation for January, with nine wet days to go.”

Kuss says January 2024 could enter into the top 5 wettest Januarys recorded.

“I don’t think it’ll be a record month, but it could be in the top [few],” he said. “Normal snow for January is 11.1 centimetres. We’ve had 36.2 cm so far, with no more expected.”

January 2006 was the wettest recorded, Kuss says, with 283.6 mm of precipitation during that month.
