Metro Vancouver’s smallest community in for big changes

Anmore is one of Metro Vancouver’s smallest communities. Northwest of Coquitlam, the village could be in for a big change.

A public hearing is set for Monday night, where municipal politicians will receive feedback on a proposed major development that would change the community of 2,500 people forever.

If you’ve driven up to Sasamat or Buntzen lakes in the past few weeks, you’ve probably seen the signs calling out Mayor John McEwan and the council to reject the plan.

Called “Anmore South”, it could potentially add 1,750 new residences to the village.

Many are calling for a referendum, but instead, they’ll get to speak out at Monday’s public hearing on changes to the Official Community Plan, which would be necessary before the development could go ahead.

Proponents of the plan say it would bring much-needed infrastructure and amenities to the community, suggesting growth is inevitable.

But those who adore the quiet, calm of Anmore want nothing to do with it.

Many of those in the community-based Anmore Neighbours Community Association complain that the project is being fast-tracked and don’t see the change that’s being pushed as a positive one.

“ANCA feels strongly that this proposed development and expansion of Anmore South will destroy the rural village character as we know it today – especially since it has the potential to triple the population of Anmore,” it states.
