Multiple injuries after Highway 1 crash in Burnaby; significant delays

Multiple people are injured after a two-vehicle crash along Highway 1 in Burnaby early Sunday morning, causing significant delays to eastbound traffic.

In an email to The Leader Spirit, the Burnaby RCMP says the crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. near the Sprott Street exit.

Five people were taken to the hospital after the crash, BC Emergency Health Services tells The Leader Spirit, but it’s unclear what the extent of their injuries are and whether or not anyone else was injured. The Provincial Health Service says six ambulances responded to the scene.

Backup is stretching past the Willingdon Avenue exit.

The Sprott Street exit and the Willingdon Avenue onramp are closed.

Police say there is no estimated time for full reopening of all lanes on the highway.

“Police are expecting eastbound Highway 1 lanes to be affected for several hours, potentially all morning, while the investigation continues,” the RCMP said.

All but one of the eastbound lanes are impacted, and as of 10 a.m., the stretch was still experiencing major delays, with backup reaching past the Willingdon Avenue exit.

Police are still on scene and say the left, middle, and right lanes will remain closed all morning.

Take Lougheed Highway or Canada Way as an alternate route.
