Multiple taken to hospital after car crashes into Vancouver medical office
Multiple people have been taken to hospital after a vehicle struck a medical clinic at Main Street and 49th in Vancouver Thursday afternoon, VPD Sgt. Steve Addison tells The Leader Spirit.
Addison says it appears that the vehicle was attempting to cross Main Street when it crashed into the building around 12:30 p.m.
“That’s a very, very busy major road,” he said. “As it was trying to cross multiple lanes of traffic, it was struck by another vehicle. The course of that collision resulted in that car striking a medical clinic that had a number of people inside.”
He says the driver of the vehicle attempted to reverse out of the building, stopping partially inside the medical clinic and partially on the sidewalk.
BC Emergency Health Services says it was called around 12:45 p.m.
“Multiple ambulance resources responded to the scene,” said paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.
“Paramedics assessed several patients on scene. A total of five patients were transported to hospital, all in stable condition.”
Vancouver Fire Rescue assistant on-duty chief Randy Boruck says at least one of the drivers is included among those injured.
Images posted online show a car partially inside the office, multiple emergency vehicles on scene, and significant damage inside the office.
Colin Bambury is the head of marketing for THC Canada, which is located two doors down from the medical clinic. He says he was serving customers when the crash happened around 1 p.m.
“I didn’t see anybody that appeared to be on the ground or physically injured or anything,” he said.
“I just saw some people that were crying and shaken up.”
Bambury says it appears the vehicle — which he describes as a grey or silver SUV — went through the wall of the medical office into the wall of the pharmacy next door, but this has not been confirmed by official sources.
Boruck says the building’s structural integrity is intact.
