The New Democratic Party selects B.C. MP Don Davies as interim leader.

The federal council and the NDP caucus decided on the local MP.

In the federal election on April 28, Davies won his Vancouver Kingsway riding with 37.23 per cent of the votes.

He has been representing the district in Parliament since 2008.

The NDP says that Davies intends to join forces with other party members to determine the party’s direction as they begin preparing for a leadership contest in the months ahead.

Former leader Jagmeet Singh had resigned after losing his own Burnaby Central seat in the Canada federal election on April 28.

Singh had been the leader of the NDP since 2017. He represented the Burnaby South federal district in Ottawa from February 2019 until losing his seat in 2025.

He placed third with 18.18 per cent of the votes, behind the winner from the Liberal Party and the candidate from the Conservative Party.

The former Burnaby South district was replaced by the Vancouver Fraserview—South Burnaby and Burnaby Central ridings in 2025.
