After a violent attack on Thursday, police in New Westminster (NWPD) are asking any additional witnesses of the incident to contact the NWPD.

Police say the incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. near the River Market.

When officers arrived at the pedestrian overpass at the south end of 8th Street, they found a man with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim was transported to a local hospital by BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics.

People who witnessed part of the violent attack told police that a group of five people initially beat up another victim.

Once the man stepped in to help, the group turned on him.

Police add that the group consisted of three men and two women.

Investigators are now searching for the five suspects and the other victim.

“We understand the other person who was attacked may be shaken and hesitant to come forward,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver from the NWPD.

“We want to hear from you. Your perspective is an important part of this investigation, and we want to make sure you’re safe.”

The NWPD says that “residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.”

Anyone with additional footage, such as CCTV or dash cam recordings, is asked to contact police at 604-525-5411.
