A young man was arrested after a 13-year-old was assaulted on a bus in New Westminster last week while heading home from school.

On June 19, Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) say the middle-school student boarded the bus along 8th Avenue around 3:30 p.m.

When exiting a few stops later, police say the student accidentally bumped into an 18-year-old man with their backpack.

“The man then allegedly grabbed the student by the throat and punched them multiple times,” police alleged in a release Thursday.

The MVTP says multiple people reported the incident, while the suspect exited at a different stop.

“Thanks to witness statements, the suspect was soon identified, and was arrested the following day.”

The suspect has reportedly been released with conditions, pending his next court appearance.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call the MVTP at 604-515-8300, or text 87-77-877.
