New Westminster police investigating after swastikas drawn on vehicles
The New Westminster Police Department is asking the public for help identifying a suspect after swastikas were drawn on multiple vehicles within the last week.
Police say that the first incident is thought to have happened on Oct. 3. The victim reported that a swastika was drawn on his vehicle, which was parked on Nanaimo Street near 12th Street. While looking into that incident, police found another nearby vehicle had been vandalized.
On Oct. 6, another resident reported a swastika drawn on his vehicle, which was parked in the same area as the previously vandalized vehicle.
Officers have searched the area for evidence, including security camera footage, but were unable to find a suspect.
“Seeing symbols of hate appear in our community is deeply disturbing,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver.
“This kind of vandalism has no place in New Westminster. We take these incidents seriously and are working to find whoever is responsible.”
New West PD says the matter has been referred to the Provincial Hate Crime Unit.
