North Vancouver’s Main Street overpass struck again

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit says the Main Street overpass in North Vancouver was struck during an incident Friday morning.

1130 NewsRadio received calls about a truck possibly hitting the overpass just after 9 a.m. The MoTT explains its maintenance contractor and bridge crews are assessing the location, just north of the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge for damage.

“There is no impact to traffic,” the ministry said in a statement to 1130 NewsRadio.

“[Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement] CVSE is aware and is investigating the incident,” the ministry added.

The BC Highway Patrol confirmed Friday afternoon that it is investigating the strike after it was first reported to police around 9:30 a.m.

“Officers attended the scene learned that a grader being transported on a flat deck tractor trailer had struck the Main Street overpass. Upon inspection minor superficial damage to the overpass was observed as well as damage to the cab of the grader,” said BCHP.

Mounties say the driver was stopped on the shoulder of the road south of the Main Street on ramp when officers arrived.

In September 2023, the same overpass was struck by a commercial vehicle, leaving behind damage and tying up traffic for hours.

Friday’s strike comes just over a week after a separate overpass strike on Highway 1 in Langley.

On Feb. 20, a truck driver struck two overpasses in a row — both the 264 Street and the CPKC Rail overpass.

In a statement last week, the Ministry of Transportation explained that it’s frustrating to see more incidents involving commercial vehicles.

“There is no excuse for this – it has never been easier to follow a route to guide a load safely through B.C.’s highway system and avoid the potential for impact with infrastructure,” the MoTT stated. “These incidents need to stop.”
