OMNI News journalists have won the 2025 Migration Advocacy and Media Awards for Best TV Special Report for “Pagbangon: Iba’t Ibang Mukha ng Pagpapatuloy,” OMNI News Filipino’s special that looks back on the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy in Vancouver and its aftermath. It featured diverse community voices and told stories of how people grieved, chose to move forward, and continue healing.

Produced by Arvin Joaquin and Paula Saraza, the special, hosted by Rhea Santos, features reports and materials from Theresa Barrera, Pat Fernandez, Keisha Balatbat and Theresa Redula.

“The OMNI News Filipino team in Canada receives this award with mixed emotions, grateful to be recognized for our work yet heartbroken for lives lost and many families still in grief who will have a difficult and different Christmas this year,” said Santos in accepting the award in Manila.

The 2025 Migration Advocacy and Media Awards honour the significant role of journalists, filmmakers, authors, and content creators in shaping public perception and highlighting the journeys of overseas Filipinos wherever they are in the world.

“A Filipino program in language in Canada, alongside English newscasts in the country, will make you think about how our stories will matter in North America? But for a country whose strength is diversity, multiculturalism, Filipinos who chose to live in Canada still crave news in their own language,” Santos said.

“As a Canadian news organization, we will continue sharing stories that are important for Filipinos in Canada as well as monitoring important issues from our home country, the Philippines.”

OMNI News is one of 18 winners from 17 countries recognized for raising public awareness by chronicling stories of the Filipino diaspora.

Aside from bagging the Best TV Special Report, OMNI News’ Senior Manager Marieton Pacheco was also named Best Media Advocate at this year’s award.

Another Canadian winner is Kababayan Multicultural Centre for Best Website.

OMNI News is owned by Rogers Communications, which is the parent company of this website.
