One person has died after a hit and run in Surrey early Friday morning, according to the Surrey RCMP.

Mounties say they received a report of a pedestrian being hit on 105 Avenue near University Drive shortly before 2 a.m. Witnesses say they saw a red Ford Mustang hit the person and then drive away without stopping.

Officers say they found the pedestrian several blocks away, suffering from severe injuries. BC Emergency Health Services arrived and declared the pedestrian dead on the scene.

Police officers say they quickly found the Mustang, and took the three occupants into police custody.

They have not ruled out the involvement of alcohol or speeding.

The investigation is in its early stages. Police say there will be road closures in the area, so drivers should expect delays.
