FILE — A City of Surrey fire engine is seen.

Surrey Fire says one person has died after a house caught fire early Saturday morning.

Crews were called out just after 5 a.m. to a home along 88th Avenue near 151st Street.

Assistant chief Greg McRobbie told The Leader Spirit when crews arrived, there was a significant amount of smoke and fire coming from inside.

McRobbie says the fire had progressed so much that it created “an atmosphere where it was hard to sustain life inside.” Seven fire trucks and 19 firefighters were called to the scene.

There were no other occupants in the house, and there are no other reports of injuries or anyone being displaced.

“It’s unfortunately a really sad day,” McRobbie said. “It’s never the outcome we want to see in a residential house.”

Crews are coordinating with the RCMP to determine the cause.

The investigation is ongoing.
