An Ontario police officer is being commended for her bravery and heroics after saving a choking four-year-old boy at a local Santa Claus parade in Innisfil.

The South Simcoe Police Service said hundreds of people were gathered at the Santa Claus parade on Sunday, Nov. 24, when several members of the public approached Auxiliary Constable Balpreet Badial, who was on duty that afternoon.

Const. Badial realized that a four-year-old boy’s airway was blocked, and he was not breathing.

The South Simcoe Police Service said Const. Badial began life-saving efforts on the boy and was able to successfully dislodge the blockage, which was determined to be a piece of candy. The child was assessed by paramedics and found to be in good health.

“I was right where I was supposed to be. I am grateful to have been able to save the life of a child in need,” Const. Badial said.

“I take great pride in serving the Innisfil and Bradford West Gwillimbury communities as a volunteer Auxiliary Constable for the South Simcoe Police Service. This family looked to me for help and as someone who could save their loved one. In these situations, every single second counts. The training, coaching and support I received with the South Simcoe Police allowed me to act fast and avert tragedy.”

The police force said Const. Badial is one of the newest officers to join the Auxiliary, and it was only her second event since she completed her training and received her badge on Nov. 14.

“Auxiliary Constable Balpreet Badial’s response exemplifies the spirit of service and professionalism that our auxiliary members bring to the community,” said Staff Sergeant Dave Phillips. “This heroic act underscores the importance of having trained volunteers to respond and step in during emergencies.”
