Parents and children crawl under stopped train: RCMP

The RCMP is reminding people about safety around trains and train tracks after an incident Wednesday where multiple people crawled underneath a stopped train.

It happened around 7:15 p.m. when White Rock RCMP responded to a stopped train blocking the crossing near the pier head.

A video posted in the White Rock/South Surrey Community Group on Facebook shows multiple pedestrians crawling under the stalled train to get to the other side.

RCMP confirmed that pedestrians, including some parents with children, crawled under instead of using the Balsam Street crossing.

“This is extremely dangerous,” RCMP said in a press release. “A stopped train can move without warning, and anyone underneath or on the tracks is at serious risk of injury or death.”

Never crawl under a train, enter the tracks against crossing signals, or walk on/along tracks at undesignated crossings, White Rock Detachment Commander, S/Sgt. Rob Dixon, added. It’s illegal and your safety is not worth the shortcut.

In Canada, train tracks are private property and crossing at any point that is not a designated crossing is illegal. The fine for trespassing on tracks was increased to $500.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada reported that in 2024, there were 56 deaths resulting from trespassing on rail lines.

White Rock RCMP cleared the tracks and remained on scene to prevent access until the line reopened approximately an hour later.
