Police incident underway in Surrey

Homicide investigators and police responded to a series of crimes, including a shooting and vehicle fire that disrupted Surrey’s 176 Street for hours on Tuesday.

Shortly after 12 p.m. on Tuesday, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) responded to reports of a man lying on a property on 176 Street just north of Grandview Heights.

When officers arrived, they located a man apparently suffering from gunshot wounds. He was then pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say that Surrey Fire Services (SFS) and BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) also attended the scene, located between 32nd Avenue and 40th Avenue.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrived shortly after and has since taken over the investigation.

Meanwhile, SPS and SFS were also called to another incident near 191st Street and 40th Avenue, which is in the same general area as the fatal incident.

Police say they responded to a vehicle fire, which investigators believe is related to the ongoing homicide investigation.

The SPS asks the public to contact police if anyone has CCTV, dash camera footage, or has witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the two areas between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Around 1:15 p.m., callers to 1130 NewsRadio have reported a major police presence on 176 Street between 32 Avenue and 40 Avenue, with a property there surrounded by police tape.

One caller reported seeing at least nine police cruisers at the scene.

Later on Tuesday, firefighters also confirmed that they were still working to extinguish a fire at a two-level single-family home near the intersection of 176 Street and 16th Avenue.

As of 4:30 p.m., crews said they had the blaze under control, and nobody was injured.

SFS was unable to confirm whether the house fire was related to the other incidents.

The incident caused traffic delays as 176 Street has been reduced to one lane in the northbound direction.
