B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was seriously injured during an arrest in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside over the weekend.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says Vancouver Police Department officers were investigating on East Hastings Street near Gore Avenue around 11 p.m. Saturday when they were approached by the man.

“It is reported that the man was attempting to interfere with the investigation and was arrested,” the IIO said in a release Monday.

While being arrested, the man sustained “serious but not life-threatening injuries” and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The IIO says it was notified shortly after.

“Initial investigative steps will confirm the details of the arrest and if officers’ actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.”

Investigators are asking any witnesses or those with video of the arrest to call the witness line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or get in contact via the iiobc.ca website.
