Port Moody police arrest 1 after traffic stop

Port Moody police say a 35-year-old man was arrested and charges have been recommended after the suspect allegedly tried to “disarm” an officer during a traffic stop.

The department says officers stopped a driver along Saint Johns Street around 10:30 p.m. Thursday to check for impairment.

According to police, the driver exceeded the legal limit and was handed a 90-day driving prohibition. That’s when police say the driver “became hostile and belligerent with officers.”

The man was arrested “given his level of intoxication.”

“During the arrest, it is alleged the driver assaulted officers, resisted arrest and attempted to disarm one of the officers of their sidearm,” the department explains in a release, adding officers were eventually able to get the suspect in handcuffs.

No serious injuries were reported.

Police are now recommending charges, including of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, and attempting to disarm a peace officer.

The suspect remains in custody.
