The Canadian Coast Guard was called to assist the RCMP in a search for a person in the waters off of Wreck Beach Thursday, a Coast Guard spokesperson has confirmed.

The Coast Guard’s hovercraft — the CCGS Moytel — was initially involved in the search along with two fast response crafts, the spokesperson says. As of Thursday evening, the hovercraft has been stood down, but the other vessels are still assisting in the search.

Meanwhile, BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says multiple ambulances and medical personnel were called out to Wreck Beach just before 3:30 p.m. about an incident off the beach.

Whether or not the incident is related to the search in the water is unclear.

“Three ambulances with primary care paramedics, an ambulance with advance care paramedics, and an advanced care paramedic response unit responded,” BCEHS said.

One patient was assessed at the scene.

“The patient did not require transport to hospital,” BCEHS said.

The patient’s condition is unclear.
