Section of HWY 3 may reopen as early as Boxing Day: ministry
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit says a stretch of Highway 3 that has been closed for several days could reopen as early as Boxing Day.
A 50-metre section of the highway, about 42 kilometres east of the Highway 3/5 junction, was washed away on Dec. 16 due to heavy rain.
The stretch will likely be reopened by New Year’s Day at the latest.
The roads were originally expected to take much longer to reopen, the ministry says, but repairs are progressing well.
“Initially, it was estimated it could take weeks to restore access,” it said.
“However, engineering confirmed less construction is needed, and utilities do not have to be relocated. Long-term repairs will require significant design and reconstruction.”
This stretch was not the only section of the highway that was damaged by recent flooding and slides. On Dec. 10, Highway 3 was closed between Hope and Princeton after an atmospheric river led to flood advisories, watches, and warnings.
These sections are set to reopen soon.
“Work at all other sites on Highway 3 affected by recent flooding and slides aside from paving will be completed by Monday, Dec. 22, 2025,” the ministry said.
“While these sites will be finished, the Highway 3 corridor will not fully reopen until the detour has been completed.”
For now, drivers from the Lower Mainland to the Southern Interior are advised to use an alternate route.
“While Highway 3 remains closed, drivers can expect heavier-than-normal volumes on highways 1 and 5,” the ministry said.
“Drive with caution and plan extra time for your journey.”
