Sewer upgrades to close parts of Vancouver’s Granville Street

Traffic disruptions are underway along one of Vancouver’s major arteries.

The City of Vancouver began a $20-million upgrade of its sewer system on the south end of Granville Street Friday.

The project will force lane reductions on Granville Street at 64th Avenue from Sept. 26, until early morning Monday, Sept. 29.

As of Friday morning, crews are already at work. Granville Street has been reduced to one northbound lane and two southbound lanes in the area.

The city says traffic personnel will direct drivers and pedestrians, but you can expect delays.

“The existing combined sewer system will be replaced with a separated and larger-capacity system, with 1 pipe for rainwater runoff and another pipe for sewage,” a city notice explained, adding that the update will help accommodate population growth and climate change, and protect the Fraser River.

After Monday, most of the remaining work on Granville Street between West 59th Avenue and West 64th Avenue will be done overnight.

“Throughout fall 2025, we will also be completing minor sidewalk rehabilitation on sections of Granville Street.”

The work on Granville Street is expected to wrap up by spring of 2026, at which point daytime construction on connecting blocks east of Granville Street — West 59th Avenue and West 62nd Avenue — will continue between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Full details of the construction project can be found on the City of Vancouver website.
