Shots fired at business in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood
Police are investigating Wednesday morning after yet another suspected extortion-related shooting at a Surrey business.
Shortly after 2 a.m. Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers responded to reports of shots fired in the city’s Newton neighbourhood at a business on King George Boulevard near 80 Avenue.
“Upon arrival, police located a business that had been damaged. Fortunately, nobody was injured as a result of the incident,” said an SPS statement.
Police say the investigation is in its early stages, but it appears to have been related to ongoing extortion cases.
The SPS confirmed to 1130 NewsRadio that the incident marks the 16th extortion-related investigation since the start of the year and the third linked to shootings.
Sgt. Tige Pollock says he understands the shooting is concerning for residents of the neighbourhood.
“It’s concerning for us too. We do have additional resources deployed in this instance. It was a business that had been shot, not a residence — not that that’s much comfort to the people who live there, but we do have additional resources that are deployed, and our investigators are working diligently to attempt to solve these instances,” said Pollock.
He says the SPS is working with the province’s extortion task force, hiring more officers, and using “overt and covert methods” to address the issue.
“We have shifted some of the responsibilities of some of our other units to focus more on extortion. So we are moving resources around. We are still able to provide frontline services, and we’re still responding to all the calls for service in a timely manner, but we are reallocating resources as appropriate.”
