The province’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a Niagara region police officer was seriously injured during the course of a domestic dispute investigation in Fort Erie.

Investigators with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were called to the area of Spears Road North around noon on January 18 for a domestic disturbance call.

After determining that a criminal offence had occurred, the Domestic Violence Unit was called to the scene to take over the investigation.

Police say around 3:30 p.m., an incident involving one of their officers and the suspect occurred resulting in serious injuries for the officer. He was taken to an out-of-region hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The nature of the officer’s injuries was not revealed.

Police say the suspect was arrested and taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The extent of his injuries was not known.

“Due to the nature of his injuries, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked its mandate. As such, the NRPS is prohibited from releasing further details,” police said in a statement released late Saturday.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
