The Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) says two people have been charged with aggravated assault in relation to a brazen stabbing aboard a bus in Surrey last year.

The incident happened on July 22, 2023, when a teenager and his girlfriend were involved in multiple “altercations” with two people. Police say the first incident happened at Guildford Mall, where “derogatory comments” were allegedly made to the girlfriend.

The two separate groups went in different directions, police say, but ended up meeting each other again at a bus stop on 104th Avenue and 152nd Street.

“Soon after the bus departed, the two suspects boarded the same bus at the next stop. A second altercation took place, during which one of the suspects removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim in the stomach before exiting onto 104th Ave. The victim was transported to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery,” MVTP Const. Amanda Steed said in an update Wednesday.

Steed says the investigation was made difficult as the suspects had their faces covered and “were wearing nondescript clothing” at the time of the stabbing, making identification challenging.

Police say on Sept. 26 last year, 19-year-old Ramadhan Ibrahim-Hussein, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were arrested in relation to the incident.

Police they both are now facing charges of aggravated assault.
