Firefighters in Surrey responded to a house explosion and fire shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

A two-storey structure was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived at the scene on Jersey Drive in Cloverdale.

Battalion Chief Jeff Klassen from the Surrey Fire Fighters Association (SFFA) says firefighters found a man in his 20s with third-degree burns.

He was found on the front lawn with severe burn injuries and was airlifted to the Vancouver General Hospital.

The fire, which caused extensive damage to the building, was under control by Friday evening.

The SFFA says an apparent explosion ignited the fire; however, the cause of the explosion remains unknown.

The blast blew out window frames onto the front lawn, with shattered glass scattered across the street.

A joint investigation by the SFFA and the Surrey RCMP’s SPOSU General Investigation Unit is underway.
