Surrey shooting victim identified as 26-year-old international student
The Leader Spirit has learned more details about a shooting that left one woman critically injured in Surrey this weekend.
The Surrey Police Service responded to reports of shots fired at a home on 103A Avenue near Old Yale Road just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
“Officers arrived and BCEHS paramedics were administering life-saving medical intervention to an adult female who was inside the residence at the time and had suffered a gunshot wound,” Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said.
“She was transported to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.”
The victim’s partner tells The Leader Spirit they had just said goodnight, and he’d gone to the next room, when he felt the vibration of the gunshots.
Damage from at least seven bullet holes can be seen on the building’s exterior.
Moments later, he says, the victim staggered in, clutching her left shoulder, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He added that she is a 26-year-old international student.
The building is student housing, where as many as 20 people live.
One of the victim’s neighbours, who wished to remain anonymous, believes they may have seen the suspect’s vehicle.
“I was sleeping. I heard a very loud bang, bang, bang — something like that. So when I opened the window, I saw it, they have a small car, but it’s dark,” said the neighbour, adding that the driver then sped away.
SPS’s Major Crime Section is investigating the shooting to determine whether it is linked to extortion.
“SPS will be working closely with our partner agencies to determine if there is a nexus to other ongoing investigations,” Houghton said.
Witnesses or anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage are asked to call the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and refer to file number 25-89656 (SP).
