Suspect in 2018 fatal shooting of Toronto rapper Smoke Dawg arrested by RCMP in Alberta
A suspect in the shooting death of Toronto rapper Smoke Dawg was arrested during a traffic stop in the Calgary area earlier this week.
The RCMP say officers were on speed patrol along Edmonton Trail NE in Airdrie on Monday when they stopped a vehicle for speeding and having an illegal window tint.
Police say further investigation from officers suggested the vehicle was stolen and as they attempted to make an arrest, the male passenger attempted to flee the scene. Officers caught up to the suspect on foot and allegedly found a loaded 40-calibre gun on him as they took him into custody.
Investigators say the suspect gave them false identification, but police were able to determine he was wanted on Canada-wide warrants stemming from the 2018 shooting deaths of Jahvante Smart, also known as Smoke Dawg, and Ernest Modekwe, known as Koba Prime. A woman who was also shot in the same incident survived.
The suspect was wanted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He is now facing more than a dozen additional charges including five firearm offences, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of resisting arrest.
Police did not identify the man since he was a minor at the time of the Toronto shootings.
Toronto police told The Leader Spirit they did not know when the suspect would be returned to Toronto to face charges.
Abdulkadir Handule was arrested in 2019 by police in B.C. in connection with the shooting. He was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, as well as aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm in 2022.
A 25-year-old B.C. resident, Alysha Chand, is facing two charges including possession of stolen property over $5,000 in connection with the traffic stop.
Both Chand and the male suspect are scheduled to appear in a Calgary-area courtroom on Thursday.
