TMU law school to replace former TPH building housing safe injection site near Yonge-Dundas

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) says the Toronto Public Health (TPH) building near Yonge-Dundas Square, which it purchased from the city last year, will be the future home of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law.

The university says it will be taking possession of the property at 277 Victoria Street, located at the northeast corner of the square, in April 2025.

“We are thrilled that the law school will have a permanent home at a key entrance to the TMU campus,” Graham Hudson, interim dean of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, states in a release.

TMU says a feasibility study will be done to determine how the 115,000-square-foot facility will be used. Currently, the renovation plan includes classrooms and meeting spaces, a mock court space, a law library and what it calls dedicated spaces for community engagement.

“Renovations are being planned to transform the space into a vibrant hub that meets the needs of Canada’s newest and rapidly growing law school. TMU is beginning consultations with the law school to learn more about specific needs for the space,” a university spokesperson says.

Last spring, the City of Toronto finalized a deal to sell the property at 277 Victoria Street and 38 Dundas Street East, which houses a safe injection site, to TMU.

TPH administrative offices will be relocated to one of the city’s core civic centre hubs. The safe injection site that operates out of the building will also be moved, but the new site has not yet been announced.
