Vancouver Aquatic Centre reopening after weeks of closure

The Vancouver Aquatic Centre is reopening Friday after closing weeks ago, the park board said Thursday.

The facility was closed for repairs after a small piece of the ceiling fell into the pool.

“During the closure, the facility underwent a thorough safety review, and precautionary ceiling netting was installed to ensure the safety of patrons and staff,” the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation said.

“These measures were inspected and the facility determined to be safe for public use this week by the City’s Chief Building Officer and structural engineers.”

Jeannie Lo is president of the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club, a 70-year-old competitive club with more than 400 swimmers.

Lo says members were left in the dark during the closure.

“It’s just the transparency, the outage for three weeks now has been quite a challenge for our club and its members,” she said.

The city hopes to replace the 50-year-old building with the construction of the new aquatic centre beginning in 2026.
