Vancouver city council has approved a massive new project for the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH).

The project will see the redevelopment of a 1.4-acre property across from the hospital on the south side of West 12th Avenue, stretching between Oak and Ash streets.

Two towers — one 26 storeys, the other 28 — will house new long-term care spaces, diagnostic offices, and clinical support. One of the towers will house 280 new seniors long-term care beds.

The VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation bought the properties, running from 900 to 990 West 12th Avenue, for $100 million in 2022.

The site currently houses the Windermere Care Centre and an apartment building.

The project is part of the city’s Broadway Plan, which means the city must relocate any tenants who are displaced by the redevelopment.
