Vancouver Coun. Bligh announces career plans

After parting ways with the governing ABC Vancouver Party earlier this year, a city councillor is expected to make another announcement Monday.

Coun. Rebecca Bligh, who has sat as an independent since mid-February, has a media event scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

“Mayor Ken Sim has abandoned the core principles that brought me to ABC in the first place, and while this was not my decision, I think it’s the right direction for me and for our city,” Bligh said at the time of her departure from the party.

In the week prior, she had openly questioned Sim’s plan to pause all net new supportive housing projects in Vancouver.

Bligh was originally elected to council as a member of the Non-Partisan Association in 2018, but cut ties with the party in late 2019. Since joining council, she has also become president of the Federation of the Canadian Municipalities.

City hall watchers have speculated that Bligh’s recent fundraising efforts signal her intent to run for mayor in the next municipal election in October 2026.

Bligh has only said the announcement will concern the “future of civic politics in Vancouver.”
