Vancouver memorial for Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy to be relocated

City of Vancouver crews will begin to take down the roadside memorial for victims of the Lapu-Lapu Day festival attack Wednesday.

The city says the mementos and tributes will be moved from the site along 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street to the nearby Mountain View Cemetery.

Filipino BC, one of the primary organizations that has been supporting the victims and their families since the April 26 attack, has approved the move.

“We are pleased to see that City staff are consulting with families and loved ones throughout this process,” said a Filipino BC post to social media Friday.

The organization has invited the community to visit the cemetery at 5:30 p.m. to help freshen the memorial with new flowers and offerings.

Eleven people were killed and dozens more were injured when the driver of an SUV plowed through the crowds attending the Filipino street festival.

The man accused of 11 counts of second-degree murder, Adam Kai-Ji Lo, appeared by video in court Tuesday, where a media consortium has challenged a publication ban on evidence to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

Lo is expected back in court to continue the fitness hearing on Friday.
