Vancouver police say a man convicted of stabbing a stranger in a Tim Hortons downtown has been re-arrested.

David Richard Morin pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in connection to the January 2022 stabbing inside the Tim Hortons at Harbour Centre near Seymour and West Hastings streets.

Security footage showed the victim, who police described as a newcomer to Canada, standing near the door when a man ran up from behind and repeatedly stabbed him before running away.

Police say Morin was originally sentenced to three years in jail, but obtained statutory release earlier this year, after serving two years of his jail sentence.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) arrested Morin again on a Canada-wide warrant Monday afternoon at his Vancouver residence.

“Among the conditions of his release was a requirement to abstain from consuming illicit drugs or alcohol. The Canada-wide warrant was issued after he allegedly breached those conditions,” the VPD said in a release Tuesday.

Police say he remains in custody.
