Vancouver’s waterfront being considered by floating hotel company
If you’ve ever imagined sleeping on the water, that dream could soon become a reality in Vancouver.
A 250-room floating hotel is being proposed for the city’s waterfront. The project, brought forward by Finnish developer Sunborn International and the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre, would be permanently moored just outside the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Graham Clarke, chairman of the flight centre, says this innovative project aims to bring tourism, jobs, and environmental sustainability together.
“It’s an excellent idea because Vancouver is very short on hotel rooms. And tourism is a green, renewable resource and a very important source of revenue for the province. So, this is something that’s really needed,” said Clarke.
Clarke adds that the hotel will run on renewable energy, connect directly to the Vancouver Convention Centre’s infrastructure, operate like a land-based building with no water discharge, and produce no emissions from engines or generators, using no fossil fuels.
“It’s a very innovative ship. It’s not only conserving energy, it’s also creating energy, and wouldn’t require any extra utilities from the city.”
In addition to its eco-friendly design, the hotel promises to create roughly 200 full-time jobs, depending on the season.
The vessel, which is set to be constructed off-site, will rise six levels above the waterline. Its lobby, restaurants, and spa – located on a lower deck – will be open to the public.
Clarke says the hotel is targeting a 2027 opening.
“The new floating hotel will be a jewel for the crown of Vancouver’s waterfront.”
Vancouver city officials are currently reviewing a rezoning application for the project.
