VPD arrest man with loaded gun in Downtown Eastside Friday
The Vancouver Police Department says it has arrested a man with a loaded gun in the Downtown Eastside.
Police say they were called to a report of a man with a gun in the area of Main and Powell around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The suspect, a 33-year-old man from Abbotsford, was found three blocks away near Gore Avenue and East Hastings.
Police say he was out on bail at the time of his arrest with conditions not to own firearms.
The VPD is touting the arrest as being a part of the $5 million ‘Task Force Barrage’ announced by police and Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim Thursday, which they are describing as a “new long-term initiative targeting organized crime and public safety concerns.”
The plan has faced criticism from politicians and members of the business community alike, with Vancouver Green Party Coun. Pete Fry calling the plan “a day late and a dollar short.”
