Woman camping on Mount Seymour dies after fall

The search for a missing woman on Mount Seymour Saturday has ended in tragedy, North Shore Rescue says.

Search manager Stan Sovdat says the woman fell off a ledge after she went to retrieve a phone she accidentally dropped down an icy slope.

Sovdat says his members were first informed of her fall by her companion, who said she had initially survived the accident.

“At first they could hear some calls, and then the calls sort of disappeared,” he said.

“Then no one was able to make voice contact with her.”

The rescue service says the search was made difficult because of the weather.

“A helicopter with rescuers could not get in because of the heavy cloud,” Sovdat said.

“So we at North Shore rescue also had a concurrent ground response going from the Mount Seymour area to the subject’s location.”

Crews eventually found her, but it was unfortunately too late.
